The coast
The Vendee coast offers a wide diversity, from the immense sandy beaches backing onto dunes and pine forests (La Faute sur Mer, La Tranche sur Mer) to the small rocky bays and fishing ports (Jard sur Mer) and including several lively resorts (Les Sables d'Olonne, St Jean de Monts). You will find lots of holiday activities - sailing, surfing, wind-surfing, jet-skis, sea fishing... And the area offers excellent sea food, either bought direct form the producers or savoured on the terrace of one of the numerous speciality restaurants.
The plain and the fens ("Marais")
The wide open spaces of the plain are a truly authentic french country setting, dotted with small villages and farms amongst the fields of sunflowers and corn. The fens near the coast (known as the land born from the sea) are much appreciated by bird watchers for their exceptional diversity and by photographers for their unique light. The canals of the well know Green Venice are well worth discovering, either by punt or canoe, to experience the traditions and the way of life of a bygone age.
The "Bocage"
In the northern part of the Vendee the countryside is gently rolling, with wooded hills and small fields of pastureland. You will discover a surprising historical heritage offering endless opportunities to while away the day in the pretty towns and villages. Not to mention the "Puy du Fou" - the biggest theme park in Europe - taking you on an unforgettable voyage through many of the periods of French history. A visit that's a must of both adults and children.
